External English Language Requirements

 The Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine and the Graduate School of Infectious Diseases use external English language test scores to evaluate the English proficiency required for academic study.

Applicants are required to submit proof of English proficiency together with their application documents.
To be eligible for admission, applicants must have obtained a TOEFL iBT score of 55 or higher, or TOEFL iBT Band 3 or higher (Test Date scores only; MyBest™ scores are not accepted), or possess English proficiency recognized by the schools as equivalent to or higher than this level. The submitted score must have been obtained within two years prior to the date of the entrance examination. For details regarding acceptable examinations and submission procedures, please refer to the relevant Application Guidelines.
Prospective applicants are advised to take an external English language test well in advance of the application deadline.
Please note that classes in the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine and the Graduate School of Infectious Diseases are, in principle, conducted entirely in English. To ensure successful study and degree completion, applicants are strongly encouraged to attain English proficiency equivalent to a TOEFL iBT score of 75 (corresponding to Band 4 on the new score scale) by the time of enrollment, regardless of the minimum application requirement stated above.

Important notice (advance announcement):Beginning with the 2028 admission selection (including the October 2027 admission selection), the minimum requirement for the IELTS score will be raised from the current 3.3 to 4.0.

Exemption of English proficiency test

Applicants who have received five years or more of their higher education (at university or college) in English as their primary language of instruction are exempt from submitting an external English test score.

Those who wish to be exempted must submit the appropriate form*.

*Form provided: Certification of Language of Instruction in Higher Education (if applicable)

Note: Having learned English as a foreign language for five years or more does not satisfy the above exemption requirement.
