Molecular medicine and cell biology based on the pathobiology of congenital diseases in animals.
Molecular causes and pathogenesis of various inherited disorders in animals provide us clues to unravel the molecular mechanisms involved in the diseases and cellular behaviors. Our major targets are the membrane and membrane proteins. At the larger scale, we are investigating how the membrane proteins are synthesized, targeted to their final destinations, and assembled into the organized architecture in the plasma membrane and organelles. These intricate behaviors are studied by biochemical and cell biological approaches to the transcription regulation, the quality control in the endoplasmic reticulum, intracellular trafficking, polarization, viral budding and protein interactions. The findings are then used to generate mechanistic understanding and models for the structure and function of cells both under physiological and pathological conditions.
