Our laboratory was established in 1922 and was named "Comparative Pathology", since the first professor Dr. Kouichi Ichikawa thought that veterinary pathology should contribute to human medical sciences as well as to veterinary sciences. His concept on veterinary pathology has been kept by his successors.
Research and educational activities in our laboratory concerns primarily on "What kind of disease is this and what is the cause of the disease?" and "How did the diseases develop?" We routinely diagnose the animal diseases occurring in various veterinary fields and search for the causes of the diseases. Some of our research papers present the discovery of novel animal diseases and newly disclosed causes of the diseases.
Inquiry into "How did the diseases develop?" may provide us the new concept on the pathogenesis of the diseases. A disease is a cascade of many tissue reactions initiated by cell damages. Clarifying whole process of the diseases may be a great help for diagnosis, therapy and prevention of the diseases. Molecular and cellular biology as well as morphology (histology and ultrastructure) are routine methods in our research activities.
